Kars city A historical gem in eastern Türkiye

Kars city

Nestled on the eastern edge of Türkiye, along the border with Armenia, where rugged landscapes merge with a rich tapestry of history and culture, lies the charming province of Kars.

I recently had the opportunity to explore Kars with a group of Turkish journalists, invited by the Serhat Development Agency, which generously hosted us during our stay to uncover the tourism potential of the region.

Despite the eastern regions of Türkiye being home to remarkable history, diverse cultures, stunning natural beauty, and rich culinary traditions, they often remain underappreciated by mainstream tourism enthusiasts.

Kars has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous civilizations and empires, including the Abbasids, Seljuks, Mongols, Ottomans, Russians, and, more recently, the modern Turkic republics. This layered history is evident in the city’s architecture, where each building tells a story from a different era. The province’s cultural identity is equally captivating, reflecting a vibrant mosaic of traditions.

The earliest settlements in Kars are believed to date back to the 13th millennium B.C., and the population today includes a blend of Turkish, Kurdish, Terekeme, Malakan, and Dukhobor communities. This ethnic diversity is mirrored in the local cuisine, where Anatolian flavors meet influences from Central Asia and the Caucasus. This cultural richness, combined with the warmth and hospitality of the locals, creates a welcoming atmosphere—even amidst the harsh winter cold—making Kars a destination not just to visit, but to experience.
